Angela James Hunt is an Associate Professor of African American Studies at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, California.  Trained as a sociologist and demographer, Professor James' areas of specialization include Race/Ethnicity, Urban Demography, Education and Research Methods; Urban Inequality, and Family Studies. She currently teaches introductory courses on African American Studies, the Sociology of the Black Community, Black Los Angeles, and Interdisciplinary Research Methods. Her current academic work crosses traditional disciplinary boundaries and comparatively considers systems of racial classification and racial formation in across the African Diaspora. 

The author of numerous articles and book chapters on race,  racial classification, and family dynamics, her articles have appeared in the Journal of Marriage and Family, Journal of Comparative Sociology, and Research in Higher Education. Dr. Hunt has been awarded major research grants from The Ford Foundation, Social Science Research Council, and The Haynes Foundation. A true Bruin, Dr. Hunt holds B.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Sociology, as well as an M.A. degree in African American Studies, all from the University of California, Los Angeles.
