Dexter Henderson, CEO, Executive Director

Dexter Henderson has served as the CEO of the South Central Los Angeles Regional Center (SCLARC) since 1987. SCLARC is a $90 million human services agency. The 240 members of the staff provide services to over 8,000 persons who are developmentally disabled within South Central Los Angeles and the surrounding communities of Compton, Gardena, Lynwood, Paramount, Bell, and Cudahy.

Immediately prior to SCLARC, Mr. Henderson served as a consultant for two years with the City of Los Angeles assisting in the development of a city-wide compliance program relating to federal and state regulations pertaining to the disabled.

Prior to his consultant practice, Mr. Henderson was employed with the California State University (CSU), Chancellor's Office for 4 years. He initially served as statewide coordinator for faculty and staff with disabilities. In his last year his duties expanded to include responsibility for the system-wide coordination of all benefit programs, totaling 25 million dollars.

Before joining CSU, Dexter served as a Deputy Director in Mayor Tom Bradley's Office of Human Resources. In this capacity, he assisted in the garnering of millions of Federal and State grants to develop public and private initiatives focusing on affirmative action, community relations programs for youth and aging and persons with disabilities. He served in this capacity for (six) years.

Mr. Henderson's community activities include membership on numerous local and statewide committees and organizations:

In 1993, Mr. Henderson was elected to serve on the Board of Trustees for the Inglewood Unified School District. During his four years on the Board Mr. Henderson distinguished himself as Vice-President and President of the Board. He also was responsible for the implementation of a district and community wide strategic planning process as well as outside management audits of all modernization and educational operations.

For the past three years, Mr. Henderson has served as the treasurer for the University of West Los Angeles Law School Board of Trustees.

In June of 2002, Mr. Henderson was elected chairperson of the new Watts HealthCare Center. Watts HealthCare Center is a federally qualified health center providing primary healthcare services to poor and uninsured residents of Watts and will be the successor organization to Watts Health Foundation.

Mr. Henderson is also a founding member of the Board of Directors for Christmas in April/South Central Los Angeles, Inc. This program is devoted to the repair of dilapidated homes of low income, disabled, or elderly residents of South Central Los Angeles.

Additionally, Mr. Henderson is a former appointee of Supervisor Kenneth Hahn to the L.A. County Hospital Commission. He further serves as a consultant to non-profit organizations regarding strategic planning, team building, and board development training.
